Identify one or two Buddhist beliefs or practices discussed in class or mentioned by the guest speaker that illustrate: a) a positive possibility theme of the tradition and b) a potential challenge of this tradition
Positive possibilities:
Empowers – ways that lead to compassion, understanding and acceptance
Guides – ideas on how to create humane just world
Encourages – instills motivation to meet new ideas and challenges with positive energy
Integrates – beliefs / practices into coherent life with serenity and conviction
Sustains – during times of difficulty
Some potential challenges:
Sectarian– judgmental, exclusive points of view
Idealogical – intolerant to difference or new ways of understanding
Control – expects obedience of unreasonable requests
Zealotry – imposes beliefs on others, sometimes violently
Creates mistrust / fear
This essay is worth 4 marks and will be evaluated on:
Depth of reflection; Use of support / explanations; readability/organization
