Descriptive Narrative: No regrets…or maybe a few. Two or more pages—full pages)
Humans seem genetically programmed to want to tell stories and share their experiences. It’s a part of being social creatures, but storytelling also comes from a natural desire to not only entertain others, but to pass along knowledge and promote social education. At some point, our story is going to have to come out.
This class, I asked you to create fiction by fleshing out and expanding a verse from the song’s lyrics. Now, we’re going to retell something real about ourselves.
Please tell me a story (non-fiction) about the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make. It can be something that turned out for the best or it can be something that you’ve regretted or continue to regret.
Learning Objectives: You should be able to use the most precise, descriptive language possible to avoid confusion about pertinent details and be able to effectively convey an experience to an audience that does not have a contextual framework for your experience.
Why it should matter to you. *Saying what you want to say and what you mean will make the difference between accomplishing your goals and not accomplishing them. Whenever you write, you should be very conscientious about whether the words you employ will achieve your intentions. If not, you will need to revise*
Your writing should put the reader in the moment, so they can see it, hear it, smell it, touch it and taste it right along with you (a good goal is to hit on all of the senses). You need to be very particular about why you chose to start and end the story where you have. There should be nothing unnecessary or extraneous.
It should be a story, not an essay. Hold the reader’s interest. Show them why it was a difficult decision for you. You may not have heard this before but a mantra by which many writers live is “show, don’t tell,” which means instead of ‘I was so, so very sad;’ say ‘the death of my grandfather carved me out with a dull spoon’ or ‘They burned my cheeks—the tears. I dug my fists into my eyes, but nothing could plug the leak.’ Let me feel your struggle and turmoil. Entertain me with the way that you tell it.
