Instruction
For this assignment, you will be participating in the USHMM History Unfolded Project by locating, researching, and uploading Cleveland area newspaper articles from the 1930s and 40s to this site: https://newspapers.ushmm.org/
Step 1: Create an account. Then use the "browse events" tab find historical topics that interest you. You will be required to upload 3 articles, on 3 different topics, from 3 different newspapers, that are relevant and advance our understanding of Holocaust-related knowledge in the United States. 1 must be via microform/microfiche.
Step 2: Search online, go to our library (esp. Special Collections RT 321), the Clevlend Public Library, Western Reserve Historical Society, etc.... (Articles may be in any language, in fact, I especially encourage the use of ethnic newspapers.) Articles may not be something plucked from a website. You must find it in an actual newspaper whether in its physical, digital, or microfiche/form format. Locate possible article candidates and check to make sure they are not already in the History Unfolded database. No repetition allowed.
Step 3: Choose your best and upload.
Step 4: Choose 2 articles and write a 500-word historical assessment for each. The assessment should address the following questions: what is the main point of the article and what evidence was used to substantiate the claim? Does it seem to make sense for time period given what you now know about the Holocaust? Are there problems or biases/agendas that readers should take into account? Lastly, how does this article help build historical knowledge or add to historical debates? Submit assessment via TurnItIn link on Blackboard homepage and email copies of your 3 articles to me.
