Begin the reading of Oedipus the King from the Prologue to the beginning of Ode 1 on the attached file. Pay special attention to the character of the protagonist, King Oedipus. watch this video on Development of Classical Greek Tragedy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmBDfl9YJY4. Write a Prologue: What character traits do you see in the king as he meets with the citizens of Thebes? How does he respond to the people who come to see him? Is he distant and aloof or does he seem deeply concerned for their welfare? How is he regarded by his subjects? Do they admire him? Fear him? Loathe him? Write a paragraph in which you describe the character of Oedipus at the beginning of the play. Scene 1 What additional character traits are revealed about Oedipus here? How does he behave once he hears what Creon has learned from the Oracle at Delphi? How do you feel about the king's behavior when the blind seer Tiresias is brought to him? Write a paragraph in which you discuss your developing understanding of Oedipus's character based on the events in Scene 1.
