Subject: The final paper will be based on the 4th, 5th or 6th chapters of Charles Parker’s Global Interactions in the Early Modern Age. These chapter deals with the large global migrations of the 15th to the 20th centuries, the changes in the global environment and ecology that these migrations caused, and the transmission of religions (and the cultures they carried) over these centuries. For your paper, chose ONE of the following sets of questions:..........
Chapter 4 Questions:
Transatlantic Migrations:
What social and economic forces drove the mass movement of peoples between Europe, Africa and the Americas between the 16th and the 20th centuries?
How did this movement of people create new societies in the Americas? Describe, in brief, an aspect of this new society that mingled European, African and American traditions and ideas.
Eurasian Migrations:
What social and economic forces drove the mass movement of peoples throughout Siberia and Asia between the 16th and the 20th centuries?
How did this movement of people create new societies in Russia and Asia? Describe, in brief, an aspect of this new society that mingled Russian, Siberian, and Chinese traditions and ideas.
Chapter 5 Questions:
Ecological Exchanges:
Why was the biological exchange (known as the ‘Columbian Exchange’) so beneficial to European colonizers? Discuss with reference to TWO distinctive factors.
Why were the raw resources of the New World so valuable to the European colonial empires? (Discuss with reference to TWO of the following resources: timber, maize, cassava, potatoes).
How else did the exploitation of ecological and natural resources hasten Europe’s rise to global power?
Chapter 6 Questions:
The Transmission of Religion and Culture
How and why did Islam and Christianity begin to spread far beyond their original heartlands? What is syncretism? Why was the early adoption of Islam and Christianity often ‘syncretistic’?
With reference to either Islam or Christianity, describe how the faith blended with local traditions to form a ‘hybrid’ faith. (Provide some examples). How, and why, did a more orthodox (or traditional) form of the faith eventually reassert itself?
................................Research:
You can certainly use the Parker text as a main source of information (I am expecting you to). My suggestion is to read the entire chapter and make some brief notes before you choose which set of questions you’d like to answer.
But, I would like you to cite TWO sources in your work which the reader could use as a further source of information. I would like you to annotate these sources. Consider these sources a ‘suggestion for further reading’ for someone who has read your paper.
The annotation, or description, of each source should address three key questions:
1. In brief, what is this article about? What is its central idea?
2. Who is the author, and what is her or his professional background?
2. What is the value or relevance of this source to your research paper?
................................Sample Annotation:
Your annotation should follow the following basic format:
Author, ‘Title of Article’, Name of Newspaper, Source or Website, Date of Posting.
Website URL. (Date accessed).
................................Here is a sample annotation:
Sang-Hun, Choe. ‘In Propaganda Video, Only North Korea Sleeps Easy’
New York Times, 5 February 2013.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/06/world/asia/north-korean-propaganda-video-imagines-attack-on-us. (Accessed October 19, 2014)
This is an interesting article which details North Korea’s release of a fantastical propaganda video which depicts the invasion of New York City by North Korean and Russian forces. It was released in conjunction with North Korea’s nuclear rocket testing, and was intended to raise the country’s morale and pride. It was published in the New York Times, and it was written by Choe Sang-Hun, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist from South Korea. The article will be useful for my paper as it illustrates North Korea’s use of propaganda in justifying its belligerent relations with the international community- the United Nations, the United States and South Korea particularly. In fact, it seems as if the constant invocation of external enemies is part of what keeps the regime of Kim Jung Il so firmly in control in North Korea itself. This aspect of North Korea’s use of propaganda will be explored further in my paper.
