NG-101-011/Spring 2018/Research Term paper
You must upload a Microsoft Word Document to Moodle for the paper to be accepted by the instructor. No physical copies. The Research Term Paper will not be accepted any other way. The window for submitting your paper via Moodle. Late submissions will not be allowed.
Goal:
You have been focusing this semester on writing a five-paragraph essay (an introduction, three supporting, and a conclusion). This paper is no different except for the fact that you are now being required to write eight supporting paragraphs. So your focus here is to write a ten-paragraph essay. Below are the prompts you are allowed to choose from and write on:
1. “Identity” is an ambiguous word. It is left open to the interpretation of the individual. How do you identify yourself and others? What is racism in today’s world and how can it be fought against? Can the stereotypes we fall victim to using ever truly be done away with? (Zora Neale Hurston’s “How It Feels to Be Colored Me”)
2. A professional athlete chooses not to stand during the national anthem. A movie star uses their award acceptance speech as a platform to protest the government. Artists, from all areas, express their political views via their work. Many believe this is wrong. Many believe these individuals should shut up. Is this right? Should a person’s chosen profession limit their ability to exercise their rights? (“Pre-Game” by Dave Zirin).
3. I have included this prompt as a third option even though we have not focused on this particular essay - The Internet has allowed us to “shrink” the distance between ourselves and others in terms of transmitting and receiving information at a highly efficient rate. The downside to it is that many believe it has caused the degradation of the way in which we interact with one another face-to-face. Do you believe that the use of the Internet is beneficial to our everyday lives or is it hurting us in regards to the way we focus, think, and formulate our ideas? (Nicholas Carr’s “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”)
After coming up with a thesis statement, you are to conduct research and write a research-based term paper, citing (direct quoting or paraphrasing) three reliable sources (one of these includes the original source essay from your textbook) to synthesize what you’re writing about. MLA Style parenthetical citations must be used (no block quoting) and a Works Cited page is required as well.
Tips (to avoid freaking out):
Think of your in-class essays. What have you been doing this semester? You have been writing essays with an introduction, three supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. So, this Research Term Paper is just that, except for the fact that it’s going to take eight supporting paragraphs. Remember, the length has changed, not the formatting. A supporting paragraph should still be comprised of: two-three sentences to introduce your point, a citation that shows an expert has thought the same as you, and two-three sentences synthesizing your ideas with the experts’.
Reliable Sources:
You are required to use reliable sources in the crafting of this paper. The minimum amount is three (the source essay listed with each prompt and two outside sources which can be either print or web-based). Once you have met the minimum requirement, you are allowed to include more, if necessary.
You must use reliable sources. The following are a list of web-based sites that are allowed: www.cnn.com, www.time.com, www.msnbc.com, www.foxnews.com, www.bbc.com. Websites not listed are not allowed, and if you find one you think is appropriate, you must get it approved by the instructor. Wikipedia (or any wiki site), Sparknotes, Enotes, Bookrags, personal blogs or any other source resembling them will not be accepted.
Try using the digital database of scholarly journals provided by Essex County College through the Martin Luther King Jr. Library, the library itself, the public library, and even a bookstore like Barnes & Noble.
Additional Information:
Create a unique title for your paper. You must use Times New Roman font at size 12. The paper must be double- spaced. Paragraph format is required. No cover page. Number your pages (top right, with your last name. Example: Tooma 1).
