Prompt: Rebecca has recently given birth to twins. At birth, both babies appeared to be healthy and had no immediate medial concerns. After newborn screening, one of the twins was diagnosed with Hurler Syndrome, a progressive and ultimately fatal disease. The other twin did not test positive for the disease. Both parents are refusing all medical care for the diagnosed twin. In fact, the parents are in complete disagreement with the physicians that the child even has Hurler Syndrome. Legally, the parents make all decisions regarding the child’s care and against all medical advice are not choosing to receive any available treatment to slow the progression of this disease. Should physicians have legal say in the care of this child? How much can the physicians overstep the wishes of the parent when some risks are involved in treatment? Do parents or physicians know what is best for the child? How would you approach having an open discussion and educating these parents who are refusing to hear about their child’s diagnosis at all?
