Behavior-Anchored Rating Scales (BARS) helps a manager or supervisor to differentiate between an effective and ineffective employee. Using this approach, an employee’s behavior is displayed on a scale typically using 3 to 5 points. The process starts with having subject matter experts identify critical aspects such as job performance behaviors, critical incidents, and definitions. Once this exercise is completed, an employee may be compared and rated to the BARS criteria for assessing effectiveness.
Be sure to review Chapters 4 and 5 of the textbook Performance Management by Aguinis (2013). Then, review the following scenario regarding BARS:
In many universities, students are required to conduct team projects. A description of these “job” duties is the following:
Work with team members to deliver project outcomes on time and according to specifications. Complete all individual assignments to the highest quality, completing necessary background research, making any mathematical analysis, and preparing final documents. Foster a good working environment. (Aguinis, 2013, pp. 128)

Explain how using the BARS rating scale would identify the competencies needed for the position described.
Examine the job duties you currently have or previously had and provide an example of a competency required for the job as well as a critical behavior indicator needed for the competency.
