Writing Assignment: American Values Research Paper
This assignment is split into two parts:
1. Last week, you conducted a survey of 7 people and presented your research report in a discussion question (primary research).
2. This week, you will expand your initial survey results from your research report to meld them with secondary research to write a research paper. (due Sunday)
Last week, you constructed a short survey around the theme of “American values.”
To complete this week's assignment, you will need to:
1. Revisit your results from last week, revise them if necessary, perhaps add graphs/pie charts to illustrate them if you have not already done so, and incorporate them into your paper. This will be the first part of your paper (after the introduction).
2. Use your research question from last week and conduct secondary research: what does the academic literature say about your topic? At the very least, use Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/) or, better, the databases of ASU's online library for your search. Use a minimum of six sources. In about 700 words, write a synthesis of your findings from the articles/books you consulted. Cite your sources conscientiously.
3. Compile a bibliography in correct format (Works Cited in MLA, References in APA). Include your primary research (look up how to present surveys according to MLA or APA). Your bibliography should contain a minimum of 7 sources.
4. The next step of this assignment is to compare the results of your primary research from last week and your secondary research from this week: are there discrepancies, or does the literature you consulted confirm your own results? How?
5. Finally, write an introduction and conclusion (five sentences minimum each).
6. Write your paper in MS Word and submit to the Assignments section as an attachment.
Your final paper will have the following structure:
• intro
• primary research findings
• secondary research findings
• comparison of the two
• conclusion
Tips:
• decide on a writing style and use it consistently (MLA, APA, etc.). The Online Writing Lab at Purdue is an excellent resource if you need a refresher:https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html
• use consistent in-text citation (all sources in your bibliography must be cited)
• avoid the first and second person (no "I" or "you")
• avoid contractions (isn't = is not) and other informal language
• make sure to proofread (points will be deducted from papers with multiple mistakes).
