  • The most effective practice to help children who have ADHD is behavioral therapy, which can be done in combination with medication or independently (Miller). Medication is also effective independently, though it is not as effective as when it is with behavioral therapy. Additionally, medication increases the effectiveness of behavioral therapy when compared to behavioral therapy alone. Behavioral therapy can be implemented by parents, teachers, or counselors (Miller). The issue with this is that if the parents are not an active part of the child's life, the child may not be able to receive all of the help that he or she needs. However, in the long-run, parents who are willing to help their child also help themselves by making home-life easier and gaining confidence (Miller).

  • Another possible issue with this practice is that if it is not implemented until the teenage years, it is not as successful (Miller). However, despite these drawbacks, behavioral therapy is still the best method for helping children with ADHD. By implementing techniques such as checklists, time limits, planners, daily report cards, and reward charts, children with ADHD are able to be better organized and therefore focus better (Miller). It teaches children the necessary skills that they need to be successful in life. Because of behavioral therapy, children with ADHD will no longer be held back by their disorder. Rather, they will prosper in life and be able to overcome their obstacles.
