Part 1 Using: White, Jonathan R. (2014). Terrorism and Homeland Security, 9th Edition. Wadsworth
Cengage Learning.
There is no universal definition of terrorism. Why is it so difficult to come to a universally accepted definition of terrorism? And if terrorism can mean different things to different people (see page 3-4 in textbook for A thru E examples), how should governments, law enforcement, and individuals respond to terrorism (and why)?
Also, read and consider the argument put forth in "Another Perspective: State Repression" on page 21 of the textbook. In this argument, it is argued that counterterrorism is more violent than terrorism. What are your thoughts on this statement, and do you agree or disagree with this argument (why or why not)?
Part 2: Using:1.) Holt, Thomas J. (2016). Crime Online: Correlates, Causes, and Context, 3rd Edition. Carolina Academic Press.
According to Chapter One of the book, during his presidency, Barack Obama issued an executive order to initiate cyber-attacks against Iranian targets. In your opinion, is it acceptable for a U.S. President to use his/her position to engage in these type of attacks, even if it is without the approval of Congress or the knowledge of the American people? And, if a nation-state engages in acts which are intended to harm others, does this constitute a form of war? Please fully respond to both questions. Also, after reflecting upon Wall's (2001) four-category typology of computer crime which do you believe poses the biggest threat to the safety and security of Americans? Elaborate. Next, consider the discussion of the hacking subculture in Chapter Two. Point to at least one aspect of the culture that you found to be of particular interest, and be sure to explain why. Also, if this participant observational study were conducted in the United States, rather than in Germany, do you think the findings would have been different or basically the same? In other words, are the findings in this study largely a byproduct of the German culture? Take a position either way and fully defend it. Point to various aspects of the chapter to support your response. Finally, once you have answered all of the above questions, please pose an original thinking question to the class.
