Instruction
Rather than working through the derivations of statistical data, you are being asked to read two academic studies that use the tools we have been studying to prove or disprove hypotheses.
The parenting study is a correlation analysis between adolescent mothers and the fathers of the entrance to determine the relationship between parenting satisfaction and a related variable. What you need to do is to examine the data in the article and discuss whether satisfaction was strong or weak, positive or negative. These terms should sound familiar by now. Here you should add--parenthetically--the actual data to show your understanding of the appropriate application of the sources, and then explain the correlation of the findings.
In your summary you should discuss the t-test findings and two-tailed t-test and explain the correlation between self-esteem and parenting with the factors discussed--self-esteem, parental warmth, depression, etc.
Then do the same for the article on gambling decisions, citing the statistics parenthetically, in drawing conclusions about the success of the programs' effectiveness, this time using ANOVA data and comment on the limits imposed on the groups being studied.
In your comparison of the two articles, explain how the descriptions (mean and standard deviation) were used, drawing attention to similarities and differences once again.
TERMINOLOGY AND LAB ASSIGNMENT
Week 5
1. Read the article, Satisfaction with Parenting: A Comparison Between Adolescent Mothers and Fathers (Thompson & Walker, 2004). Discuss their findings using t-tests and correlation statistics. (Note: they also use Regression, which we did not cover; you do not have to report on that.)
2. Read the article, Gambling Decisions: An Early Intervention Program for Problem Gamblers (Robson, Edwards, Smith, and Colman, 2002). Discuss their findings using ANOVAs.
3. Comparing the two articles, how were Descriptive (Mean and Standard Deviation) used?
YOUR GRADE CALCULATION WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:
The parenting study is a correlation analysis between adolescent mothers and the fathers of the entrance to
1) determine the relationship between parenting satisfaction and a related variable.
What you need to do is to examine the data in the article and discuss--
2) whether satisfaction was strong or weak, positive or negative.
gR
3) add--parenthetically--the actual data to show your understanding of the appropriate application of the sources, and then
4) explain the correlation of the findings.
In your summary you should--
5) discuss the t-test findings and two-tailed t-test and
6) explain the correlation between self-esteem and parenting with the factors discussed--self-esteem, parental warmth, depression, etc.
Then do the same for the article on gambling decisions--
7) citing the statistics parenthetically, in drawing conclusions about the success of the programs' effectiveness,
8) this time using ANOVA data and comment on the limits imposed on the groups being studied.
In your comparison of the two articles,
9) explain how the descriptions (mean and standard deviation) were used,
10) drawing attention to similarities and differences once again.
