Primary source analysis and post reply

Analytic reply to the following post: What effect did the Second World War have on U.S. views on "race"? The new progressive civic nationalism allowed immigrants to "feel for the first time, that their religion and ethnic background would not be held against them" (Gerstle 154); the immigrants were hopeful to receive the same treatment as American born natives within the workforce. Roosevelt's New Deal as well as his support of unions allowed the non-native blue color workers to have a voice. The union representatives would speak on behalf of the workers to negotiate better wages and working conditions. "Workers saw FDR as their ally" and "encouraging their efforts to secure and extend their rights as citizens" (Gerstle 154). FDR also included Catholic and Jewish leaders in his council of advisers, which inspired other catholic and Jews of a changing nation. Unfortunately the effects of WW2 would overshadow the changes that were occurring, people would again highlight immigrants as attempting to harm the U.S. The attack on Hawaii would lead people to assume all immigrants are spies or less American and immigrants would attempt to loose their heritage traits, only to assimilate and avoid persecutions.
