College Writing I
Cause/Effect Essay
Assignment Overview: For this assignment, you will be writing a response essay based on readings and discussions relating to the topic of the effects of technology and social media on privacy. For evidence in your paper, you will be referencing your personal experience, as well as quoting from the articles/ videos you viewed online. In addition to analyzing the impact of social media and technology on privacy, your essay should include the following elements:
An effective introduction- Introduce the topic of privacy. Perhaps you can start with a definition or personal anecdote to draw your reader into the essay. Remember to “hook” your reader and get him/her interested in reading more of your essay. Your thesis statement will clearly present your point of view regarding the effects of social media and technology on privacy. Although it is not necessary, you may also decide to present the specific effects addressed in the essay.
Several body paragraphs (at least 3) - For each paragraph, there should be a topic sentence and specific details that support it. The topic sentence will present the effect. Each paragraph should address one effect at a time. In terms of the details, you need to be sure that you are properly quoting from the articles and videos, as well as providing specific details of your personal experience. You will need a sufficient amount of evidence for each effect, so present at least two examples for each effect from the evidence you have read, viewed and/or experienced.
**It will be required that you reference the following at least once in your paper as evidence for one of your effects:
1) One of the two online articles-“There is No Vacation from Cybercrime at WiFi HotSpots” or “Identity theft growing, costly to victims.”
2) One of the three articles discussing new technology as it impacts to privacy- “Privacy and the Surveillance Explosion,” “Computing Ethics: No Limits to Watching” or “Security Versus Privacy”
An effective conclusion- You will need to bring closure to the essay, perhaps revisiting an anecdote you mention in the introduction. In any case, you will want to revisit the thesis. Review the ideas and techniques for conclusions in the previous lesson on strong introductions and conclusions.
Effective proofreading –In addition to the content revision, you should be careful to check your paper for spelling, typographical, grammatical, and punctuation errors.
