Instruction
Paper 2, Phase B
This assignment requires you to use the Historical Thinking Matters website,
http://historicalthinkingmatters.org/socialsecurity/.
Compose a well-structured, thesis-driven essay of 850 to 1000 words which addresses the
following question.
Historians agree that Social Security is at the heart of New Deal reform. Given that, what
does Social Security tell us about the set of policies and programs called the New Deal?
Support all of your arguments with specific, detailed evidence.
o Your evidence should be taken from as many of the primary source documents as you
can use, including the documents from the Warm-Up Exercise. You may also cite the
textbook.
o Do not use evidence from economic theory or your own modern-day political
viewpoints. This is not a paper about your personal opinions on Social Security, the
New Deal, or the proper size and role of the US federal government.
To write the best possible answer, youll want to think through the following questions,
which are part of the Week 11 discussion topics.
o What were some different criticisms of the Social Security program before and after
Congress approved it?
o What other proposals existed during the 1930s for addressing problems of poverty
and unemployment?
o How could you generalize your answers to these questions to gain insight about the
New Deal as a whole?
