Reflect on the reading, writing and discussion of this course The Language of Leadership. What new ideas or perspectives did you learn? How will they help you in your professional or community involvement? Description of Course: In todays complex environment, leaders engaged in shaping public policy must know how to use the emotional as well as the intellectual power of language to motivate, inspire, and competently manage their organizations. In this course, students examine techniques, such as effective communication, used in dynamic leadership that affect conscious and unconscious influences on human behavior. Through discussions, group assignments, and individual projects, students apply theoretical and practical course content to demonstrate the necessary components for making effective human connections. Students also learn why stories, symbols, and metaphors are essential elements in the language of leadership. Learning Objectives Stated in Terms of Learning Outcomes: Establish a personal commitment to continually develop the communication skills necessary to be an effective leader; Analyze the different language forms that reflect the communication style of different types of leader/managers; Give examples of how values, beliefs, assumptions and expectations are tacitly imbedded in language by one's culture; Explain what is meant by unconscious motivation and emotional intelligence; Examine the multi layers of meaning within a story and when and if ambiguity is ever appropriate; Develop the ability to actively listen to others; Evaluate if a story is authentic or manipulative; Demonstrate how effective stories are built on sound forethought and well constructed mental models; Use story, image and metaphor to influence others, activate change and receive commitment within an organization. Required Text(s) and Other Materials to be Furnished by the Student: Clawson, James G., (2012). Level Three Leadership: Getting Below the Surface, (5th ed.), Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson/Prentice Hall. (Paperback) Hansen, Drew D., (2003). The Dream: Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Speech That Inspired a Nation, New York: Harper Collins. Simmons, Annette, (2006). The Story Factor: Inspiration, Influence and Persuasion through the Art of Storytelling, Cambridge, MA: Perseus
