* if you have chosen to do your Research Paper on symbolism, make sure you consult Writing About Symbol to insure your analysis is properly focused.
Rather than a sustained argument in expository essay style (i.e., a research paper), the Research Paper asks you to analyze a series of sub-topics and present them in a series of mini-essays.
Your analysis of each sub-topic should be written in proper paragraph style and observe correct grammar rules for academic writing. Replies should be complete sentences (not “bullet points,” lists, or phrases), and paragraphs should be coherent and unified.
Each sub-topic section must include at least ONE documented reference to a literary critic Use either direct quotation (recommended) or a proper paraphrase (this is more difficult to do correctly) and properly cite using MLA style. However, direct quotation or paraphrasing should NOT overwhelm your report. No more than 1/3 of the writing in this report should be from an outside source. I want YOUR thinking (supplemented by the sources you have encountered).
You may also quote from the play, but do so judiciously. Your final report should NOT be a bunch of direct quotes strung together. I want to see YOUR thoughts in YOUR writing.
Consult Incorporating Quotations for more information about limiting direct quotation AND incorporating quotations skillfully.
You must include references from a MINIMUM of FIVE (5) outside sources of literary criticism (the play does NOT count) in your report. [CORE REQUIREMENT] These sources must
be obtained from Seminole State Library resources (either databases or hard copy resources.
directly relate to the specific aspect of the play that you have chosen
be formattted in MLA style.
Your paper must be a MINIMUM of SIX (6) pages (not counting the works cited page). It doesn’t matter if you only have one word on the sixth page, but you MUST get ON TO the sixth page. [CORE REQUIREMENT] To ensure you have met this requirement, make sure you have properly formatted your report, make sure you have:
used 12 point, Times New Roman font
used 1” margins (right/left/top/bottom)
double-spaced everything (do NOT put extra spaces between sections or anywhere else)
Here is a sample (mock-up) of what your paper should look like.
Here is a brief video tutorial on formatting your paper.
