Interest Group Assignment
One of the more interesting interest group clashes in the Texas Legislature last year involved the most Texan of subjects...beer.
The growing craft beer industry has been a subject of great interest to beer distributors (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., one of the most historically powerful interest groups in Texas. Craft beer companies are, of course, competitors. On the other hand, brewers don't just compete with rival beer companies, they compete with wine, liquor, and non-alcoholic options in an increasingly health-conscious consumer market. Big brewers probably spill more than most craft brewers sell each year, but still seem to work tirelessly to make it harder on their smaller competitors.
The clash last year was over H.B. 3287 - a measure favored by wholesale beer distributors to keep smaller brewers from circumventing the "three tier" system that keeps them in business.
Your assignment: Write a 2 - 5 page essay (college-level, double-spaced, etc.) explaining:
1. What you would do to help get this bill passed if you were representing wholesale beer distributors
2. What you would do to change or defeat this bill if you were representing craft brewers.
3. Finally, how you would respond to these groups, their arguments and activities if you were a state legislator.
