Pay-for-Performance (P4P) is the new buzzword in healthcare reimbursement and is popular among policymakers, Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers. Simply put, Pay-for-Performance is an incentive-based program that rewards hospitals and physicians if they meet or exceed quality or performance measures.
What would a "quality measure" look like in a medical setting? Here are a few examples: a decrease in year-to-year hospital readmissions, better control of hemoglobin A1C in diabetic patients, and interventions for smoking cessation.
However, not everyone feels that linking quality to payment is a good idea. Read the following article and list three drawbacks to the current Pay-for-Performance model.
