Assignment Content
Purpose: To discover how the discipline of Psychology is perceived by people with no formal training in the area, and to reflect upon your own understanding of and interest in the discipline.
Topic:
Part 1. Find a fellow student/friend who has never taken a Psychology course (college or high school.) Ask him/her these three questions, and write down the answers.
1) "Name a psychologist, living or dead, who has made an important contribution to psychological knowledge"
2) "Is the discipline of psychology a science? Why or why not?"
3) "Name an important discovery in Psychology"
Part 2. A relative asks, "So, you are thinking of majoring in Psychology...why? I hear that it is a very broad discipline...what topic in Psychology is interesting to you? Have you thought about how a Psychology major might be helpful in preparing you for a career?" How would you reply?
Length: One to two pages (sides), typed. This assignment is meant to be written in paragraph form and not bulleted.
Grading: To receive an "A" grade, your paper must:
Provide clear and complete answers to the stated questions in paragraph form
Use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation
Adhere to the formatting guidelines stated in the syllabus
Deficiencies in one or more of the above elements will result in a lower grade.
