Instruction
Here are the questions:
Chapter 6:
1. Your author, on p. 167-168 provides 3 reasons why IVF (in vitro fertilization) is unacceptable. Critique at least one of these reasons, supporting your critique with material from the chapter.
2. Since many insurance plans do not pay for ART (assisted reproductive technologies), it is utilized mostly by couples who are at least middle class, discuss whether this is problematic in view of justice. Should reproductive technologies be available to all?
3. Consider case 6F, p. 185, about a brain dead young man whose wife wants to donate his organs but also wants to have his sperm harvested so that she can conceive a child using ART. Discuss.
Chapter 8:
1. Genetic testing can be done for diseases for which there is no treatment and no cure. If a relative of yours suffered from one of those diseases, would you want to have that test? If yes, why? If no, why not? (please draw on the material from the chapter to support your answer.)
2. If it became possible to enhance your unborn child genetically--like providing a gene for exceptional athletic ability or language skills--would you do it? Explore ethical issues like fair distribution of health care goods.
