Use the Persuasive Essay Prewriting Guide on the following page to create an outline for your paper. You don’t have a set number of body paragraphs that are required, but as you’re planning, remember that your finished paper should be between 2-3 pages in length. Save your outline as a Word document. You will submit this to your teacher. Once your outline is complete, compose your first draft, and save it as a Word document. You will submit this to your teacher. When you have completed your first draft, open the Revising and Editing Checklist, and check your rough draft for each of the elements listed in the checklist. You will submit this to your teacher. Once you have completed all three steps, proceed to the Persuasive Essay First Draft Editing assignment. In this assignment, you will answer a set of questions based on the Revising and Editing Checklist, and then attach your outline, your first draft, and the Revising and Editing Checklist. (You will have multiple attempts on this assignment, which means that you will not be locked out of it if you discover that you need to change something.) If you have any questions or need help as you are working, be sure to email your teacher. Persuasive Essay Prewriting Guide Your persuasive essay should include the following: • An Introductory paragraph that grabs the reader’s attention and includes a thesis which contains a strong, arguable claim. • Body paragraphs - each should include: • Topic sentences - Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence that explains what the paragraph will be about and logically and clearly relates to the thesis. • Evidence – Use a minimum of three quotations from the text. Be selective in choosing your quotations from the text (and outside sources if you choose to use them), and effectively blend your evidence with your own words (blended quotes). • Persuasive Appeals - Your paper should include at least two types of persuasive appeals to enhance your message: • Pathos • Ethos • Logos • Persuasive Devices - Your paper should include at least two persuasive devices to enhance your message: • Repetition • Restatement • Parallel structure • Rhetorical Question • Allusion • Partial Concession • A Concluding Paragraph that ties the paper together and brings it effectively to a close. • Reword your thesis in a creative way. • Use a “clincher” as your final impression to the reader. This can relate back to the attention-getter or the title of your paper. • MLA Requirements: • Correct MLA formatting throughout your essay. • Effective use of parenthetical citations. • Works Cited Page – Create your citations using the information in the Persuasive Essay and Speech Overview for each source. Your Works Cited page should be the last page of your paper. Be sure to review and carefully follow the guidelines for MLA formatting of your Works Cited page. No plagiarism
