One of the most significant issues in American politics today is the state of economic inequality. For a long time, politicians or political activists who raised this issue were accused by some of engaging in "class warfare," but the topic now seems to be a regular item on the political agenda, with both Democrats and Republicans repeatedly emphasizing the growing gap between rich and poor, and the struggles of the middle class. Your research paper should address the following questions:
1) How are income and wealth currently distributed in the U.S. today? Use at least three different sets of statistics to illustrate what economic inequality means.
2) What are the long-term factors (going back at least three decades) responsible for the current state of economic inequality? Consider economic, political, and demographic/social trends that might help to explain the growing level of inequality.
3) What are the short-term factors responsible for more recent trends in economic inequality? What events/policy decisions have taken place since 2008 that would help to explain the current state of economic inequality?
4) Is the level of economic inequality we are currently experiencing harmful to the overall US economy? Provide evidence to support your analysis.
5) What role did the issue of economic inequality play in the 2016 and 2018 elections? Do you expect it to be an important feature of the 2020 elections?
Your paper should be approximately 6-8 pages in length, not including your bibliography. You are free to write more, but I think it will be difficult to do an adequate job in fewer pages. Your paper should be typed, double-spaced, with 1” margins and 12 point font. You need to include a proper bibliography. ANY standard bibliographic format is acceptable; I do not have a preference. A page tacked on to the back of your paper with a simple list of websites is NOT considered to be a proper bibliography. You must provide a citation for any information or quotation you obtain from a source outside your textbook. Attempting to pass of the ideas of others as your own is plagiarism, and will be treated harshly. I suggest that you seek out sources beyond what is available on the internet, including actually talking to real people who might know something about this topic (interest group representatives, journalists, congressional staff, professors, business leaders etc.) I do NOT consider Wikipedia to be an acceptable source. .
