Instruction
You may use the following as prompts: We tend to think about scientific discoveries in terms progress and potential for improving society. However, many scientific discoveries often have unanticipated positive and negative consequences. Discuss this duality with respect to lead and CFCs. Discuss the tension between lead’s usefulness and profitability and its serious health consequences. Do you find it surprising that industry chose profit over health and the environment? Carbon dating is a common dating technique. The dates often appear straightforward, yet the science is complicated. What are some of the complicating factors that must be considered when applying this technique? What are some of the errors that could potentially compromise a 14C date? Why do you think a fish based diet would lead to a spuriously old 14C age? What characteristics of the uranium-lead system allow it to be used to date the Earth? What were some of the challenges Patterson faced while developing this tool? Do you think the goals of corporate and academic research are different? Would you trust the results of both types of research? Do you think industry should be involved in academic research? Scientists are key employees at corporations that manufacture chemicals with harmful effects on the environment and human health. Scientists are trained to ask questions and interpret data. This chapter describes how corporate scientists continued to develop and use chemicals with extremely serious negative impacts. Do you think they chose to ignore certain data? Or were influenced by corporate goals? What would a model of corporate scientific integrity look like and would it be profitable? What do you think Clair Patterson’s most important contribution was?
