Instruction
This assignment question presents two separate scenarios and asks you to determine if lying by the authorities is justifiable in either or both. Please respond to both scenarios in 800 words and in APA format The first is the case of police who have arrested a person they suspect to be involved in a series of burglaries. They do not have enough evidence to charge this person but have asked him to come down to the station for an interview. He agrees, and about halfway into the interview, they tell the suspect that they have his fingerprints from the scene of one of the burglaries and also tell him they have an eyewitness. Both of these statements are lies. The suspect then confesses. In the second scenario, Homeland Security agents are interviewing a suspected terrorist in Afghanistan whom they believe is connected to the Al Qaeda network of terrorism. They tell him they have video of him participating in a terrorist act and that they also have a member of Al Qaeda who is now cooperating and named him as a member of that group. Both of these facts are false. He then admits to his involvement in some terrorist activity and is so charged. •Is lying justifiable in either of the above scenarios? •In the first scenario, would the confession be admissible in court? •Is there a distinction between the two scenarios and/or should there be? •Does lying in either case affect the credibility of the officers or agents? •Would these falsehoods or lies be something that would have to be mentioned in the officers’ and/or agents’ investigative reports?
