FIRST: Read Genes May Be Responsible for Anorexia,Too
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which a person has an exaggerated concern with being overweight. This fixation on weight typically leads to inadequate food consumption and excessive exercising. Severe cases of anorexia have led to drastic weight loss and even starvation. Typically, anorexia nervosa has been considered a psychosocial disorder with a cognitive component associated with self-image. Recently Dorothy Grice, MD, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Psychiatry and Center for Neurobiology and Behavior has found evidence linking anorexia and certain genes.
Read “A Genetic Link to Anorexia” from the Monitor on Psychology (2002, Vol. 33, No. 3). http://www.apa.org/monitor/mar02/genetic.aspx

SECOND: Using article and other sources (you MUST cite where information is coming from!). Answer the questions in 3-4 sentences. Be sure to answer EACH question. You do not have to include the questions, but please number your answers.
1. What types of biological evidence have researchers found regarding anorexia nervosa?
2. What is genetic linkage?
3. What experimental technique did Grice and colleagues use to determine genetic linkage?
4. Describe the results of the analyses and discuss what they mean with regards to anorexia.
5. Why does research focused solely on sociocultural factors provide a limited perspective of anorexia?
6. How does genetic profiling influence the treatment of anorexia?
