Instruction
For this final discussion, I you are provided with a scenario from the 2013 movie Lone Survivor. If you have not seen the movie, the assignment will explain the scenario.
In the 2013 hit movie Lone Survivor ( https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1091191/ ) a group of Navy SEALS is on a mission in Afghanistan to capture and/or kill an Al Qaeda leader who has killed many American soldiers. As they lie in wait, they are stumbled upon by three goat herders tending their flock. One is an older person, one is younger, and the third is a young boy. The SEALS have a discussion amongst themselves about what to do: let the three go, probably jeopardizing their own safety and the mission because they do not know if these people are Al Qaeda sympathizers, or kill all three and continue with the mission.
• How do you think they should react in this situation?
• Are there any alternatives other than the above two that I mentioned?
• Is it morally and ethically wrong to kill the three people and continue with the mission? What moral or ethical theory are you relying upon for this decision, and how does it apply?
• Would killing them be an example of noble cause corruption or the ends justify the means?
• If you saw the movie, was the outcome (what the SEALS did) the correct choice?
