Instruction
Section 1
Consists of three independent parts. Address each part.
• Vendors provide many services to users. What governs the relationship between any vendor and the user is their Service Level Agreement (SLA). What are the critical elements that should be covered under these agreements? What is the role of the network manager to control such agreements?
• Assume that you are appointed as the network manager in a college where you have to maintain the college classroom network. State your assumptions about the size, maximum applications, and maximum users for the college classroom network you have visualized. Identify the devices that you’ll use to maintain the network. What will be the key information you will need at your Network Management System (NMS) to be able to manage the possible devices on this network? Justify your answer with appropriate rationale.
• Research examples of cloud services and identify one example of each of the following models:
o Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)
o Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS)
o Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).
Be sure to identify the roles for each example. Also, characterize (discuss) each of your examples as much as possible using the textbook Tables 4.1 and 4.2
Section 2
Consists of three independent parts. Address each part.
• MIB is a key element in the network management framework, and it complements SNMP as the main management protocol. How does MIB complement SNMP to provide a complete management solution? Provide specific examples for the same.
• SNMPv1 has five different commands. If you have the option to add one more command, what will this command be? Justify your answer in terms of the benefits, overhead, and complexity.
• The issue of what entity (cloud role), between the cloud consumer, cloud provider, and cloud carrier, should assume liability in terms of security can be a challenging one, depending on the cloud service model. For example, the consideration of security policy disparity could cause added complexity. Discuss the issue of sharing of liability between the different roles involved, providing a rationale and possibly actual or hypothetical examples.
Section 3
Consists of three independent parts. Address each part.
• Events can be reported in two main fashions: polling and reporting. In the polling system, the management station will query the agents for their values and their events, while in the event reporting paradigm the agents will report their values and their events back to the manager. When would you choose one approach over the other and why? Justify your responses with appropriate examples. Which approach does SNMP use and how?
• RMON1 objects provide new information at the Media Access Control (MAC) layer, whereas RMON2 objects provide new information at the Network layer and all layers above. The focus of RMON2 objects is an examination of traffic at the Network and higher layers of the OSI Reference Model so that the levels of service can be requested, granted, and managed. RMON2 is matched to the need of state-based traffic analysis being required by today’s network. Do you agree with that claim? Why? Justify your answers with rationales.
• Based on your textbook readings explain the notions of polling agent and regular monitoring agent implementations and discuss the differences between the two notions.
Section 4
Consists of three independent parts. Address each part.
What makes Web-based management such a successful approach? Is it only the convenience? Support your answers with good reasons and examples. Web-based management tools can be product-line specific or can be product neutral. What do you think are the pros and cons of each approach? Explain how SNMP is related to Web-based management.
Your readings from your textbook Cloud Computing: Concepts, Technology & Architecture introduced several specialized cloud mechanisms that involve intercepting inbound messages, such as Automated Scaling Listener, Load Balancer, SLA Monitor, Pay-Per-Use Monitor, and Audit Monitor. Discuss architecture considerations pertaining to the implementation of these mechanisms in a cloud. For example, would you use virtual resources? Dedicated physical resources? Would you consider integrating some of these mechanisms under shared virtual or physical resources? How much fault-tolerance should apply?
Research a company that offers a Web-based management solution (a technology supplier, or a cloud provider). Review basic features supported by such a solution. Discuss how the mechanism adds value to cloud-based offerings.
