Instruction
1. This is an excellent piece: the Washington Post article "Out of Control" from October, 2014.
2. Overview: This is a good timeline here about how the Outbreak spread in 2015 from ABC News. BBC News did a good mapping of the outbreak as well.
3. A good summary of the outbreak was published by the New England Journal of Medicine, "After Ebola in West Africa -- Unpredictable Risks, Preventable Epidemics" (11 Aug 2016)
4. Read the WHO Report of the Ebola Interim Assessment Panel from 2015.
-Discussion: Consider the timeline of events and what we knew when. Take a position on whether earlier intervention could have saved lives - and WHEN such an intervention should have happened. Or, if you believe nothing could have changed the course of the outbreak, state why.
For those of you who are more interested in the medical countermeasures aspect, please see "Integrating Clinical Research into Epidemic Response: The Ebola Experience" from the National Academies. You can read the whole book there. If you wish, you can answer a modified discussion question: if vaccine trials had been allowed to start earlier (when and which ones?) - would that have impacted the course of the outbreak?
