From Danielle Keats Citron's Hate Crimes in Cyberspace.
- Explicit hate has found a powerful outlet in the internet, and understand the Internet's key features helps us understand why. In a speech at the Web 2.0 Expo in 2009, The social media expert danah boyd offered these insights:" Our bodies are programmed to consume fat and sugars because they're in nature.... In the same way, we're biologically programmed to be attentive to things that simulate: content that is gross, violent, or sexual, and gossip, which is humiliating, embracing, of offensive. If we're not careful, we're going to develop the psychological equivalent of obesity. We'll find ourselves consuming content that is lease beneficial for ourselves and society as a whole."We are already substantially there. The Internet helps fuel the desire for salacious, sexually degrading, and hateful content and spreads it far and wide.
Write an essay in which you explain why you agree or disagree with Citron's assessment of the Internet. Please support your argument with specific examples.
