Instruction
1- In talking about political parties, Emerson says, "A party is perpetually corrupted by personality" (para. 11). Does this statement agree with your observations about today's political parties? Emerson does not define the term "corrupted", but in order to think clearly about what he says, how would you define it?
2- Arendt states that “the politically most important yardstick for judging events in our time” is “whether they serve totalitarian domination or not” (para. 10). Examine the events in your time that you think may be tending toward serving totalitarian domination. Describe those events, clarify their tendency toward producing totalitarianism, and suggest how the world should react to those events in order to prevent the development of totalitarianism.
