Instruction
The purpose of this assignment is to assess your knowledge of governance and how governance is operationalized in a sporting context. As such, this assignment requires you to write a governance report for a sport organization of your choosing. Think of this report as serving a twofold purpose: 1) to inform the reader of how governance functions in the organization, and 2) to inform the reader of the effectiveness of governance in the organization. So, as the student creating this report, make sure to balance the informational and evaluative content in the report.
Please note: Not all of what you will need to write a comprehensive report will be accessible online, and you may need to talk with a representative of the organization you select. Therefore, make sure to factor this into your timescales for completing this assignment.
Some questions that you might want to think about answering within your report:
What are the formal, legal, and structural elements of governance?
What is the strategic capability of the governing board/board members?
What is the relationship between paid staff and voluntary board members?
What is the role of governance in designing the strategic direction of the organization (i.e., foresight)?
What is the role of governance in monitoring the performance and compliance of the organization (i.e., oversight)?
What is the role of governance in generating wisdom on behalf of stakeholders (i.e., insight)?
You may want to include a governance structure map as a figure within your report, but this should not be more than a half page in size.
As a simple outline, the report should include the following elements:
A title page
An executive summary
The report itself
References page
The main body of the report is limited to 4 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins, and APA formating for in-text citations. The 4-page limit excludes the title page, executive summary, and references page - so most likely you will submit a 7-page document. Use of headings and sub-headings is strongly encouraged.
