Instruction
I'm taking history of mathematics essay, this essay isn't so much about math. It's about the history or culture of whatever topic you pick to write about.
You choose the topic. Once you choose the topic, I can attach some sources from my school's library because using one from the library is part of the criteria. Criteria is posted below.
In Module 4, you will submit your first research paper of only 750-1000 words. In it you will make an argument that supports a thesis with evidence, showing understanding of both mathematics and its historical/cultural context. That context can be beliefs, practices, events, or values that influenced the ideas or people in mathematics that you are researching. You will be required to use at least 3 high quality sources, 1 of which must be from the ESC online library and 1 of which must be peer reviewed.
For now, we ask that you submit a proposal described below for your instructor’s approval.
Using the text readings for this module:
• Choose one mathematical topic. This should be an idea, event or person from before 1900.
• Choose one aspect of the historical or cultural context around your mathematical topic.
Evaluation Criteria for the M4 Paper
Your paper will be evaluated on the following characteristics:
1. Clear statement of a thesis.
2. Use of critical thinking - i.e. do you look at ideas and events analytically & critically instead of just reporting what you read?
3. Accuracy of factual content.
4. Understanding of mathematical ideas that are discussed
5. Defense of the thesis with evidence, placing mathematics in historical and cultural context: that is, events, beliefs and values that influenced the ideas/people in your research.
6. High quality sources, appropriately cited in text notes and the source list.
7. Clear, correct writing and organization. Grammar, punctuation, and spelling do count.
