It is early March 2014. The management of Getty Images is considering whether to move forward with a proposed plan in which they would remove the watermarks from their embeddable images. Under the new plan, rather than requiring payment for licensed content used in social media, users would simply have to provide a footer at the bottom of the picture with a photo credit and a link back to Getty Images licensing page. It is anticipated that such a move would help Getty Images gain even more traction with getting their licensed images diffused throughout social media, but at the same time there is concern about the impact on the ability to monetize their intellectual property assets.You have been asked by Mark Getty to prepare a short memo making a recommendation about what Getty Images should do. He has specifically asked you to outline the costs and benefits of such an approach, to make a recommendation about which approach Getty should take, and what additional actions should they take to reinforce their online presence and monetization if they proceed with your overall recommendation.
