For the first paper, I am asking you to reflect on Shoshana Zuboff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism in relation to a widely reported case of cybercrime (i.e. what we are calling “digital crime” in this course). To find a case to write about, you will need to do some basic research on the internet, in the following manner:
You can simply look up well-known cases of cybercrime or narrow your search to include only certain types of crime, like the theft of internet property
you should be making notes of any ways in which Shoshana Zuboff’s The Age of Surveillance Capitalism might provide insight, either about the crime itself or the cultural, economic, and/or political context in which it took place
Make sure to cite each of your articles properly – you can use APA or MLA style –and quote from them when it seems helpful, such as when someone’s reflections on and analysis of the crime you are writing about are provided
For the paper itself, your assignment is to COMBINE the research you did the previous week with The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, paying particular attention to the ways in which Zuboff’s argument can be used to complicate our understanding of both digital crime in general and the crime about which you wrote your response.
There are many different approaches you might take on this assignment. I am open to anything that permits you to demonstrate how thinking about the book in relation to the crime – and the crime in relation to the book – reveals insights that might otherwise be overlooked.
Having said that, however, I think the easiest approach would probably be to focus on Zuboff’s invocation of robbery as a way to make sense of activity that is technically legal, such as in her discussion of digital dispossession.
To put this another way, as you reflect on the crime you have selected, ask yourself why it counts as a crime; whether it is possible to imagine a society in which it doesn’t count as a crime; and how the fact that it is an example of cybercrime affects our perception of both the crime itself and the people who committed it.
Also, given the fact that the title of Zuboff’s book is The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, you would probably benefit from giving thought to the relationship between capitalism and crime.
Please be sure to ANALYZE at least TWO passages from the book in-depth as you develop your argument. These passages should do more than merely fit your argument. They need to enhance it. The entire book is fair game EXCEPT for the introduction and the passage from Part I, Chapter 4, “The Moat Around the Castle”, that I focused on.
