Instruction
1.) In the Apology, Socrates claims he possesses a kind of wisdom and that his community is served by it. In what way is Socrates wise? How is this brand of wisdom advantageous to him? How does he understand a ‘wise’ person’s role in the community and what specific method does he employ in his service to others?
2.) In the Republic, Socrates uses the metaphor of the Man, Lion, and Beast. What do these thee parts represent and how are they related to one another in both the unjust and the just individual? (Be sure to develop for both frames all particular cases discussed in class.)
3.) Using either the Divided Line or Allegory of the Cave, explain how and why Plato’s differentiates between knowledge and opinion and then state the ultimate goal of education.
4.) Socrates says that there are four cardinal virtues within the city and within the individual. List all four, and then pick TWO (not starting with the letter J) and say what they are with respect to both the city and the individual soul 5.) Present Plato’s 2nd argument for the immortality of the soul from Phaedo. (Make sure to include all relevant premises.)
