One of the most interesting products recently revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show this year was a device that will allow consumers the opportunity to listen to Internet radio stations in their cars. If this product eventually becomes a mainstream item, it may spell the doom of subscription satellite radio.
With this new technology, it brings on another issue that would develop with Internet radio available in the automobile is how would royalties be paid to the songwriters and artists. As of now, terrestrial radio stations (AM & FM) pay license fees only to the creators (songwriters) of music they play. With Internet radio now, a new push is under way to have stations pay both the writers and the artists. This may cause a huge problem, and many stations that now broadcast online would take their stations off the Internet to avoid paying these huge fees. If this happens, it would inhibit the new technology of mobile Internet in vehicles to become a popular option.
We now have numerous options for music listening and sharing, and because of this, there are those opponents who feel that mobile Internet radio is not necessary and there is a need to help support and keep satellite radio building an audience base.
Keeping all these thoughts in mind, answer the following questions:
1) Do you subscribe to satellite radio (Sirius-XM) and if so, how long have you been using it? What are reasons for not subscribing.
2) Do you listen to any Internet radio stations, and if you do, what stations are they and why do you favor those particular formats?
3) Whether or not you listen to either type of platforms, what is your opinion of Satellite radio and Internet radio as long term entities for entertainment?
4) How would you feel about paying a fee for Internet radio in your car, and how much are you willing to pay for the privilege of having it available for listening?
5) Which radio stations that you listen to are streaming online content, and do you listen to that station online?
Be sure to elaborate on your answers, and if you don't listen to satellite or Internet radio, what are some of the reasons why you don't listen.
