Callahan (1987) argued that a natural life span exists, although at a somewhat higher age span than “three score and ten”, and that it ends with death, which occurs as a natural component of the life cycle. Callahan’s criteria for a person’s natural lifespan are as follows: 1. One's life work is completed. 2. One's moral obligations to those for whom one has responsibility have been discharged. 3. One's death does not seem to others an offense to sense or sensibility or tempt others to despair and rage at human existence. 4. When the process of dying is not marked by unbearable and degrading pain. The limits of a natural life span would be reached when these criteria were met, and at that point, Callahan offered the following principles of healthcare practice. 1. After a person has lived out a normal life span, medical care should no longer be oriented toward resisting death. 2. Medical care following a natural life span would be limited to the relief of suffering. 3. The existence of technologies capable of extending life beyond a normal life cycle creates no technological imperative for its use. Adopting these principles would have the result of decreasing overall health care costs as we presently concentrate the largest portion of our health care dollars in the last year of people's lives. One of the benefits of the Natural Life Span view is that it would preclude the spending of vast sums to stave off the inevitable death that occurs at the end of the natural life cycle. For all the criticism of the Natural Life Span argument, it may be an ethically persuasive model if it operated as a closed system, where all savings gained from limiting technology at the end of life could be used to enhance health during the other phases of a natural life span. Discussion: Do you agree or disagree with the Natural Life Span argument? Back up your opinion with solid reasons based on the health care required for your own care or that of your parents, friends, etc.
