Instruction
As a scholar practitioner, it will be important for you to continue to use professional journals and other research sources to guide your practice. Developing the skills to review, critically analyze, and discuss professional literature are essential for your development as a competent counselor. In some cases, counseling scholars review and summarize the professional literature for you in order to provide a synopsis of trends, misconceptions, and promising areas for future research.
In this forum, you have the opportunity to review literature reviews constructed by counseling scholars. Through review of your learning resources for this week, you will be able to develop a conceptual understanding of the scholar practitioner model and how professional literature plays a role in all that you do as a practicing counselor. You also will be able to learn from your fellow students through their thoughts and comments.
In this discussion, you will need to familiarize yourself with understanding of a meta-analysis, which involves summarizing or aggregating the results of individual quantitative research studies obtained from a literature review that address one or more related research hypotheses. To prepare for the discussion:
Select an article related to counseling from the PsychInfo Database in the Lamar University Library. The article must be a metaanalysis.
For your search use the the keyword "metaanalysis" and the area you that interests you (e.g., group counseling).
Then think about how and why the literature review from the article can inform your practice as a counselor
Use the document in Assignment 1 titled Navigating Your First Library Search to get started.
Initial Post is due by Day 4 - a brief synopsis of the literature that was reviewed in your selected article. Explain the implications of the research, as represented in the literature review, to practice in the area represented. Support your initial post with at least two cited resources. In order to be eligible for maximum points, respond by Day 6 to two or more peers, (each post, including the initial post must be done on separate days) which may include your instructor, who provided different examples/articles than the one you selected. Include all references in APA format and respond by:
• Asking a probing question
• Sharing an insight from having read someone's posting
• Offering and supporting an opinion
• Validating an idea with your own experience
• Making a suggestion
• Expanding on peers or instructor postings
Return to this discussion in a few days to read the responses to your initial posting. Note what you have learned and/or any insights you have gained as a result of the comments your colleagues made.
