Instruction
You are the project manager for a new nanotechnology research laboratory. Senior leadership has asked for an initial general design, providing high-level information in a number of specific areas about this laboratory. Leadership recognizes that a more detailed design done with assistance from appropriate architectural and science engineering firms will be required later, but they want you to prepare initial considerations for the new laboratory addressing a number of areas.
They asked you to submit a report to the Facility Manager and the Research Committee. The new facility must meet the requirements of the various research divisions located throughout the organization. It must provide a safe and reliable work-space, balance features and finances, and be designed with an expected life-cycle of 10 years. The facility will be used by some research divisions for teaching graduate and post-graduate students and fellows. The design should use sustainable concepts when and where feasible to do so.
Do a preliminary general design. Based on your design, write a report that addresses the following topics:
1. Provide a general description of the facility, including its purpose, likely location (within, near or away from the organization's primary location), and any other general characteristics of the lab.
2. In general terms, describe the lab's interior space, addressing important factors.
3. Provide highlights of the indoor environment using principles and important concepts.
4. Discuss materials, and identify sustainability options and opportunities that offer a balance between functionality and finances.
5. Describe, in general terms, the approach that will be used for maintenance support and ongoing operations of the new facility.
6. Conduct a risk assessment and identify the three most significant risks involved in designing, constructing, commissioning, operating and maintaining the facility over its planned life-cycle.
