Purpose: To familiarize you to the process of Socialization and how it has an impact on our individual and group culture. Socialization is how we become familiar with norms, values, beliefs and behaviors in our society. Our primary agents of socialization being the family and the secondary agents of socialization being school, work, church clubs etc. Understanding how socialization and culture work together allows us to see things from another person or group's perspective and helps us develop empathy. We don't have to like other people or groups of people, but sure helps our understanding of society if we are willing to step back and examine this. This helps develop critical thinking and cultural competency. Task: Tell me about how culture and socialization affect individuals and society. How might someone who has different political, religious and ethical beliefs as well as cultural and financial capital have arrived at their station in life? This could be someone who is culturally different than you, or two people you are comparing. You must cite the two sources in-text and on a reference (works cited) page (last page of your answer). It is ok to use your text as one of the two references. Your quiz must be at least two pages long, double spaced, not including the reference page. Use APA format. Think about the Sociological Imagination... the intersection of history and Biography. An individual's or group of people's epoch of history (time and place they lived in) and their own personal life experiences (socioeconomic, culture and possible race and ethnicity).
