Annotated Bibliography write an annotated bibliography to prepare for the research paper I have picked the topic: The University of Toronto is changing. International tuition is rising. There is a mental health crisis on campus where students are demanding improved services, program and policy changes, and increased material supports. Instruction is increasingly being carried out by sessional instructors, supervised by a growing amount of administrative staff. The province has clawed back funding and restructured student fees. Today, provincial support accounts for less than a third of the total university budget. To make up for this, the University has expanded enrolment in expensive professional programs and seeks to expand international enrolment. However the austerity does not seem to impact the enormous capital projects on campus, including the new AI centre. In what ways is the University privatized, neoliberalized and financialized?

Method: Choose a topic from the research paper assignment description. Find 4 journal articles and 4 long form newspaper or magazine articles that are not on this syllabus. For each article, write a short 150 - 250 word summary. Use the prompts in the reading responses for guidance. There should be an introduction that outlines the topic chosen. This should present at least two research questions that will guide the research paper, explain how and where these articles were found and why these articles were selected for this assignment. A strong introduction will also include a preliminary thesis statement for the final paper. There should be a concluding paragraph that summarizes patterns and relationships across the articles. This should include how this collection of articles related to each other, what makes them different, how scholarly research differs from the popular press. Strong papers will present preliminary findings. Requirements: A title page An introduction and conclusion 8 entries of 150 - 250 words 4 scholarly sources 4 popular sources Do not use any texts from the syllabus Correct use of APA style Evaluation: This assignment is worth 15% of the final grade. Grading will consider the quality of the introduction, conclusion, summaries and analysis. Summaries should be more than just description. Correct use of APA style will factor into the grade. The quality of the articles selected will also be considered when evaluating the annotated bibliography. A book review is not a good scholarly source. Make sure all the articles are authored, that they are substantive (long and detailed) and are from a reputable source. For example, the New York Times and the Globe and Mail are more reputable over TMZ, InfoWars, or personal blogs. Magazines and periodicals can be good sources. For academic sources, consider the discipline of the journal. Research in Geography or social sciences journals is likely more relevant other disciplinary publications. Prompts: What is novel about this article? Why is this article important? What is the author's argument? How is this article in dialogue with other texts? Who does the author cite? Who is the intended audience for this article? What ideological position does the author take? What sort of data is used in the paper? Tips: This assignment is to prepare for the final research paper. The student is tasked to find texts to bolster their position so that the final paper does not merely summarize research. A final research paper that does little more than summarize research is well below expectations. Use recent articles. The more recent, the better. Avoid using old, outdated, or no longer relevant articles. Consider the questions in the reading responses to improve the summaries Learn to use citation software. There are many free applications that can help organize and format citations, including Zotero, Mendeley and Refworks. There are also online citation generators. Use an academic search engine to find scholarly articles: U of T library, Google Scholar, J-Store, Scopus, or Web of Science Scholarly book chapters count as scholarly articles Use a popular news search engine, for example news.google.com Do not use ‘un-authored’ newspaper articles from newswires such as the associated press
