AI writing reports: what a score can tell you

Understand AI writing indicators, false positives and why a detector result needs human review.

An AI writing score is a model output, not a finding of academic misconduct. Start with the report and the rules for the assignment.

Read the right number

Turnitin describes its AI percentage as the share of qualifying prose its model identifies as likely AI-generated. It is not the probability that a student broke a rule.

Allow for mistakes

Turnitin says its model can misidentify writing and should not be the sole basis for action against a student. A false positive means human writing was flagged; a flag alone does not establish authorship.

Ask for context

Ask which passages prompted concern and which course rule applies. Bring existing notes and drafts to explain your process. Describe any tools or assistance you actually used.

Common questions

Does a low score prove AI use was permitted?

No. Course permission and disclosure rules apply independently of a detector score.

Is this an AI checker?

No. This page explains reports; it does not scan or accept student writing.
