Part one: Module 1: Discussion 2 -- Eligibility Determination - Specific Learning Disability
Chapter 1 of your text describes and analyzes the processes and procedures used to identify students with specific learning disabilities. As well, the issues related to appropriate identification of these individuals are discussed.
The following discussion questions are designed to help you more closely examine this concept.
Instructions:
Read Chapter 1, pages 1-6
Provide a written response to the discussion questions below:
1. What is IQ-achievement discrepancy, and what are the concerns about using it to determine eligibility for special education programs and services as a student with a specific learning disability (SLD)?
2. What alternatives are there to traditional IQ-achievement discrepancy approaches for identifying students with specific learning disabilities?
3. How does response to intervention (RTI) address concerns about the IQ-achievement discrepancy practice?
Submission Instructions:
1. Answer the questions thoroughly, following the APA guidelines when citing references from the book and other sources.
2. Your responses must be a minimum of 3 paragraphs and clearly written without grammatical and/or spelling errors.

Part two: Module 1: Reflection 1 -- Video - Specific Learning Disabilities - Dyslexia
Our first two videos for this week review the various special education eligibility categories and provide detailed information about, specific learning disability, the largest category of disability in the united states. Our third video provides an interesting, thought provoking TEDx Talk about “dyslexia”.
The following reflection prompts are designed to help you more closely examine these concepts and share your personal feelings and opinions about them as an educator.

Share your initial reactions to this presentation about individuals with dyslexia.
Share your thoughts about this idea of a possible link or relationship between dyslexia and creativity.

Because this course is being offered during the summer when schools are closed and during the covid-19 global pandemic, the requirements for this particular assignment have been altered. Instead of observing a student at your school with learning and/or behavior problems for about 30 minutes. (This should be a student with an IEP currently being implemented), you will:

In this course, students are expected to observe, identify, and describe the characteristics of students with learning and behavior problems. Students are also expected to identify and describe the factors in determining the severity of a learning or behavior problem.

2. Interview an adult, age 18 or older, who qualified for special education services as a student with a "specific learning disability" and had an active IEP while in school.
OR
Interview the parent of a student, who currently qualifies for special education services as a student with a "specific learning disability" and has an active IEP.
You may use the following prompts to assist in conducting the interview:
Share your understanding of what it means to have a learning disability.
Share your understanding of what is means to qualify for special education services.
Describe positive supports and interventions provided by the special education professionals at your school.
Describe specific challenges that you or your child experienced in the classroom.
What advice would you offer me, as a graduate student in a teacher education program that will prepare me for a career in the field of special education?
Submission Instructions:
1. Submit a 1-2-page written summary of your interview.
2. DO NOT include any names or other identifiable information in your paper.
3. You should however, describe the participant with "unidentifiable" information, so I will know that you interviewed an adult who has a learning disability or the parent of a child with a learning disability.
3. The written summary should be clearly written without grammatical and/or spelling errors and should follow APA guidelines.
