Part 1: Module 5: Discussion 1 - Discussion Questions for Module 5 (Dealing with Student Behavior)
The eighth chapter of your textbook takes a close look at how best to deal with disruptive and defiant student behavior. To deepen your understanding and to examine this information in a new perspective, the following discussion questions are provided.
Instructions:
Provide a written response to the two discussion questions listed below:
1. The following list reflects aspects of the school experience in which teachers often struggle to maintain smooth classroom functioning. For each area listed, give at least two methods you could use in responding to misbehavior.
* Difficulty getting the attention of the class
*Too many students needing assistance/one student constantly seeking assistance
*Students who resist becoming engaged in an instructional activity
* Frequent call-outs by students during instruction and independent work
2. Name five strategies that teachers can use to respond effectively to defiant behavior. What important considerations should teachers make in deciding which intervention to use?
Part 2: Module 5: Assignment 1 - "I-Messages" Scenarios
Within Module 5 you have explored that uncomfortable situation experienced by many teachers . . . dealing with recurring student disruptive behavior within a classroom. You have read chapter 8 of your textbook and viewed the presentations available for this module. Now you will explore how to use "I Messages" to assist with diffusing and improving a student's misbehavior.
You will read and reflect on five scenarios provided to you; these are all examples that in some way deal with student disruption of the learning environment. For each scenario, you are asked to write an “I-message” that would be an appropriate teacher response to the situation described in the scenario. Each “I-message” must be at least one complete sentence. Refer back to the Effective Responses to Behavior that Disrupts the Learning Process presentation for detailed information on the three components that MUST be included in each "I-message" you write.
Instructions:
Read the five "I-Messages" scenarios, and after viewing them, write at least one full and complete sentence including all three required components using an "I Message" to best handle the situation. Please note that you must write an "I-Message" and not just a good way to speak with the individual in the scenario. Thus, if you do NOT use the actual "-Message" format, points will be deducted from your assignment grade. Be sure to be full and complete in your answers.
Submission Instructions:
Your response to all of the "I Message" scenarios should be edited to verify that they are actual "I-Messages" and for grammatical and spelling errors. The submission must adhere to the general writing style and formatting guidelines of the APA Manual (7th ed.).
Part 3: Module 5: Assignment 3 - Scenario Response and Reflection
Read the scenario below. Then write your thoughts and feelings about the scenario and describe how you would personally handle the situation. Submit this for instructor feedback.
Instructions:
As described above, read and think about the following scenario:.
You are going over double digit multiplication problems. As you do, you begin Cold Calling students to talk about both the process and the answers to each step. Some students are repeatedly calling out the answers to your questions. They giggle when you first ask them to desist.
Write your thoughts and feelings about this scenario, describing how you would personally deal with this situation based on your experience and things you have learned in this course.
Write a minimum of 4 to 5 paragraphs with these thoughts and submit it for instructor feedback.
Submission Instructions:
Your response should be edited for grammatical and spelling errors and adhere to the general writing style and formatting guidelines of the APA Manual (7th ed.).
Part 4: Module 5: Assignment 2 - IRIS Module -Functional Behavioral Assessment: Identifying the Reasons for Problem Behavior and Developing a Behavior Plan
You have now read a number of chapters within the textbook and have viewed the PowerPoint presentations and accompanying videos in five (5) modules. In Module 5, you have focused primarily on how to handle classroom management situations that are not the norm. To further deepen your knowledge and to provide a different perspective, you are asked to view an IRIS module entitled "Functional Behavioral Assessment: Identifying the Reasons for Problem Behavior and Developing a Behavior Plan") to complete this assignment. Please note that you will learn much more about the Functional Behavioral Assessment process in another course.
Instructions:
View the IRIS Module entitled "Functional Behavioral Assessment: Identifying the Reasons for Problem Behavior and Developing a Behavior Plan." Please double check that you access the correct module. To access this, visit the IRIS website at IRIS Center, Peabody College, Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN). Once there, navigate to the module described above.
After viewing it, answer the questions found at the end. Be sure to be full and complete in your answers.
Submission Instructions:
Your response to the questions in the IRIS Module assigned should be edited for grammatical and spelling errors and adhere to the general writing style and formatting guidelines of the APA Manual (7th ed.).
