Consider the short story " The Lottery" in a pdf document below and the Assignment Worksheet which you will download, fill-in.

1. Preview: Before you read the story, look up information about the author -Shirley Jackson ( her bio/ interesting life events) and the time period the story was written -1948 ( consider some important historical events during 1845-50).
Make some note of your findings for the Assignment Worksheet below
( 3 interesting facts about each: the author's life and the time period)
2. Reading for Meaning: When you read the short story " The Lottery," pay attention to the meaning of the title, some words/ phrases, interesting details, descriptions, and the characters' names. Also, consider the questions after the story. We will discuss these questions during our next Zoom.
For Semiotic Analysis: You will copy out 2 words/ phrases and you will choose 2 names of the story's characters and you will provide their denotative and connotative meanings ( meanings in the story). You will also briefly comment on the story's title. All these will be done in the Assignment Worksheet
3. Critical Response: After you have read and considered the semiotic analysis, you will write/ type your opinion about the story ( 5-6 sentences only) in the Assignment Worksheet
Also, look up / google an interesting or a weird tradition / celebration that we have and are following up until now (anywhere in the world). Summarize your finding and write /type about that tradition in 5-6 sentences including the information about the tradition and your opinion about it in the Assignment Worksheet
