InstructionRead the “Poem" pdf file. Try to get a feel for the kind of poet Sōgi was, paying special attention to how Sōgi's poems relate to the lines preceding it (seasonal imagery, topic, etc.). Offer comment on Sōgi's lines, adding to the comment offered in the anthology. The selection in the anthology is only the first half of the hundred “links” in this famous session. The last lines are 7-7 by Shōhaku: “I have piled upon my brow / The frosts of night after night.” When you reach this point in your reading, try to add the next three links: 5-7-5 (by “Sōgi”), 7-7 (by “Sōchō”), and 5-7-5 (by “Shōhaku”), where you as your poet write the lines. Your lines do not have to be of 5 or 7 syllables or even rhyme, and you should feel free to add some flavor of your own.
