For this assignment I want you to consider the conspiracy theory. Find a current one that you find fascinating. Do some initial googling to get the contours of the conspiracy. Then, do some research. You’re not trying to debunk or verify the conspiracy. Instead, you should try to approach the theory as our researchers into urban legends approached it. Analyze it not so much for the content, but for the underlying (perhaps unconscious) motivations for the belief in the conspiracy. Also take a look at how it developed and spread. Remember, our folklorists were fascinated by new ways to spread dubious information. Turn an eye to the internet and social media and think about what it means that counterfactual information can thrive on so many platforms.
