This unit’s materials have introduced a number of changes made to policy and legislation that have expanded opportunities for men and women in military and paramilitary professions. For this Assignment, you will first view a movie or television show that features women and/or men playing characters who hold non-traditional gender roles in either military or paramilitary service. Then, you will write a 350- to 500-word essay to analyze the link between the changes in policy and legislation and the production of film media that features men and women in non-traditional gender roles.

Part 1 Choose a movie or a single episode of TV show produced within the last 5 years in which the main characters are either members of military or paramilitary service. Identify the roles played by men and women who are depicted in non-traditional gender roles. Choose just one of the non-traditional roles for analysis in Part 2. Make detailed notes as you watch on how the non-traditional gender role is portrayed in the show. Conduct research to determine what change in legislation or policy change might have influenced the inclusion of the character you observed in the movie or television show that you watched. Part 2 The Analysis Essay Once you have watched the movie or TV show, you will write an essay to summarize and analyze the data you collected during the viewing. The essay will be 350–500 words in length. Double spaced 12-point Times New Roman font 1ʺ margins on all sides Separate title page and reference page A minimum of one scholarly source. The textbook is an excellent source. Remember: Wikipedia, encyclopedias, and encyclopedia-type sources (answers.com, infoplease.com, and such) are not considered academic sources. The essay should include these elements: Introduction Explain the purpose of the essay. Name the TV show or movie you reviewed. Give a two- to three-sentence brief summary of the plot of the show or movie. Portrayal of Non-Traditional Gender Roles (five to six sentences) Describe the character that you have chosen for the analysis. What are the demographic characteristics of the character? What is the character’s career field in the movie or TV show? What role within that career field does the character play? Present the evidence you observed that suggests that the character is portraying a non-traditional gender role within the organization where she/he works. Influence of Legislation or Policy Change on Entertainment Media Identify one or more legislative or policy changes that may have influenced the entertainment media industry to produce media that portrays this character in a non-traditional gender role. Explain the policy or legislation. Describe how the legislation or policy may have resulted in inclusion of a character who plays a non-traditional gender role in the show that you watched. Conclusion Restate the main points made in the paper. Offer a substantial opinion on whether or not the portrayal of the character in the non-traditional gender role in some way advances equality without regard to sex, sexual orientation, or sexual identity within the values systems that are unique to military and paramilitary organizations.
