Instruction
One important concept to undersand is plasticity of the brain. Infants' brains are developing and will be molded according to the input they receive, the environment they are in, social interactions, etc. We are studying plasticity of the brain in the context of infants, but I want to make the application to adulthood. Unfortunately infants do not choose the the input and feedback they receive from their environment and much of their early "programming" will stick with them for life. Having said that, it is important to realize that we, as adults, did not choose our early "programming" either. Take some time to reflect on some of the attitudes and beliefs that were taught to you early in life and what they mean to you today. Some of them will be positive and some will be negative. The good news is that with our brains being malleable (plasticity of the brain), you can consciously choose to adopt better and healthier attitudes and beliefs. An example might be someone that was raised in a home where anything less than perfection in school was unacceptable. This person is likely to be a bit of a perfectionist and be too hard on themselves. It is just a natural response due to this early "programming." However, as an adult you can consciously choose which attitudes are helping you and which are hindering you and decide to change those beliefs. For this assignment, you do not need to get too personal. Just think of two attitudes that were ingrained in you early on that are positive (empowering) to you and two that are negative (counterproductive / dis-empowering) and how you can change them. Then describe a couple of positive shifts of thinking that you can make. Write at least one paragraph of at least five sentences on the positive attitudes and one paragraph of at least five sentences on the negative attitudes. Please be sure to apply critical thought and clearly explain your points.
